Students Go International: Epidemiology and Entomology Students of FKM UNDIP Dive into Molecular Malaria Research in South Korea

South Korea, 5 November 2024 – Students from the Department of Epidemiology and Tropical Diseases, the Department of Health Entomology, and Master Study Program of Epidemiology, Faculty of Public Health, Universitas Diponegoro, embarked on an enlightening journey under the Students Go International Program supported by World Class University Program Universitas Diponegoro. The program was designed to strengthen global collaboration and research skills through a series of academic and practical activities focusing on molecular malaria research. The week-long program was held across three renowned institutions: Kangwon National University, Yonsei University (Wonju Campus), and Institute Pasteur Korea.

The program commenced with a seminar at Kangwon National University, titled “International Collaborative Research on Malaria for Developing Technology to Address Future Infectious Diseases in the Climate Change”. This session brought together staff from both institutions to discuss how international collaboration can drive innovative solutions to combat malaria in a changing climate. The seminar highlighted the importance of international partnerships, Korea-Indonesia, in combating emerging infectious diseases, particularly malaria, amidst the growing challenges of climate change.

In addition to the seminar, the students participated in a hands-on laboratory practice focusing on cell culture, a critical technique in molecular malaria research. This hands-on experience provided an in-depth understanding of culturing methods, essential for malaria diagnostics and research.

The second leg of the program took place at Yonsei University, where the students delved deeper into the complexities of infectious diseases in tropical environments. A seminar with the theme of “Navigating the Challenge of Infectious Diseases in Tropical-Diversed Environments in Indonesia” underscored Indonesia’s unique challenges in managing infectious diseases in diverse ecological landscapes.

The students also had the opportunity to strengthen their practical skills through lab sessions on digital PCR, an advanced molecular technique critical for infectious disease diagnostics. Additionally, they were introduced to cutting-edge molecular laboratory equipment, gaining insights into its role in modern research applications.

The final leg of the trip took the students to the Institute Pasteur Korea. Here, they were immersed in a world-class research environment, touring the institute’s laboratories and gaining insights into biosafety and biosecurity practices. The students also received valuable sessions on Good Laboratory Practice (GLP), ensuring that they are well-equipped to conduct rigorous and ethical research. These activities emphasized the importance of safety and quality in high-standard research environments.

This international experience has undoubtedly broadened the students’ horizons and inspired them to pursue further research and innovation in the field of molecular epidemiology. By engaging with renowned scientists and researchers, the students have gained valuable knowledge and skills that will undoubtedly contribute to their future academic and professional endeavors. The Students Go International Program not only enriched the students’ knowledge of molecular malaria research but also strengthened cross-border collaboration and cultural exchange. Through this program, UNDIP continues to strengthen its role as a leading institution in global health research and education, preparing its students to contribute to scientific advancements and public health solutions worldwide.
