Wolbachia the Controller of Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) Presents in Semarang City: Interactive Dialogue with Semarang City Regional People’s Representative Assembly (DPRD)

Semarang (Thursday, 8 December 2022) Semarang City is an endemic area for Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF). The Semarang City Health Office recorded the number of dengue cases translucent at 700 cases in 2022. This number is higher than last year’s DHF, up to two times. The Health Service stated that there were 5 sub-districts that were recorded as Red Zones by the Semarang City Health Office, namely: Tembalang, Banyumanik, Ngaliyan, West Semarang and North Semarang. There is a need for comprehensive handling to prevent the spread of DHF attack areas by involving all related parties. The Health Office has conducted a socialization program for Wolbachia, which is a bacterium implanted in mosquito eggs so that the Aedes aegypti mosquito does not transmit the dengue virus when it bites humans. Bacteria that can only live in the body of these insects are passed on to the next generation through the female (mother) route.

The potential use of Wolbachia as Dengue Control will reduce the lifespan of adult mosquitoes by half, which means reducing the biting/transmission period and the incompatibility of sperm and eggs.

Mr. Kadarusman, the Chairperson of the Semarang’s Regional People’s Representative Assembly (DPRD), in this case agreed and was willing to facilitate the funding raised in handling to free the community from Dengue Fever.

Entering the transition / change of season from the dry season to the rainy season, which is accompanied by changing weather conditions, is very vulnerable to causing attacks of various diseases in the community. The various threats of this disease, of course, must be watched out for and carried out by the community for prevention independently, in groups and by the Health Service.
