Tambaklorok Marine Fishermen Village, Tanjung Mas Village, North Semarang District, is one of the assisted areas of the Faculty of Public Health, Universitas Diponegoro (FKM UNDIP) in community service activities. Located on the north coast of Semarang City, this area is one of the areas most affected by climate change. Land subsidence occurs almost every day, accompanied by tidal floods which are an annual phenomenon. This condition causes people to face a high risk of being exposed to various diseases, especially zoonotic diseases (diseases transmitted from animals to humans), such as leptospirosis and dengue hemorrhagic fever.

As a form of commitment to improving the health of coastal communities, FKM UNDIP held community service activities involving international experts, namely Dr. Nur Faeza Abu Kassim, Associate Professor in Medical Entomology from Universiti Sains Malaysia. During his scientific visit to Tambaklorok, Dr. Nur Faeza and her team conducted a survey of mosquito and rat breeding sites and provided direct education to residents about simple and applicable disease vector control measures. “The environmental conditions and public health challenges in Tambaklorok are very similar to those we face in several coastal areas of Malaysia. Therefore, a community-based approach to vector control is very important,” said Dr. Nur Faeza in a discussion session with residents.

This service activity is part of the Visiting Professor Program of FKM UNDIP, which aims to strengthen international collaboration as well as update the insights and scientific standards of the academic community through direct interaction with experts from various countries. As part of a series of activities, on June 2, 2025, FKM UNDIP also held a Vector Control Training for 30 health cadres from all villages in North Semarang District. Located at the Muria Hotel Semarang, the cadres received intensive training for one day on the identification of disease vectors (mosquitoes and rodents), biological characteristics, life cycles, and environment-based control strategies. This program is expected to equip cadres as agents of change in their respective communities, so as to be able to strengthen promotive and preventive efforts against zoonotic diseases in coastal areas that are vulnerable to climate change.
